Blocking of an independent website in the Internet age is utter marasmus.
Activist of the Belarusian National Congress from Minsk Valiantsin Trokski stated this, commenting on the blocking of the website Сharter97.org:
- Blocking of Сharter97.org shows complete disregard for our interests by the authorities. People's opinion does not interest our officials in any way.
Of course, there is competition between different departments as well. Someone wanted to curry favor, offered to block the Charter-97, and their proposal was supported. But these measures completely do not correspond to the current realities. We live in the age of computer technology and the Internet. What kind of information blocking can we talk about?
I believe that a person chooses what information to read on their own. Censorship should be abolished, and free access of Belarusians to independent information must be restored. The materials published by Charter'97 do not contradict the Belarusian legislation. The decision of the Ministry of Information absolutely does not surprise me. Our officials seem to live in a parallel universe.
The fact that people continue to visit the site and there is a demand for Charter'97 shows that this was the authorities' mug's game.
