On the night of October 30, 1937, at least 132 Belarusian cultural figures, scientists, and officials of that time were shot in Minsk, writes Nasha Niva. Among them were 22 writers. In 2024, memorial events are taking place in more than 40 cities in at least 15 countries.
In Vilnius, the memorial event "The Night of (Not) Murdered Poets" was held on Victims Street (Aukų g.) near the building where the Lithuanian branch of the KGB was once located.
In the Warsaw Museum of Free Belarus, with the support of the Dzeia Druhaia ("Second Act") theatre and the Warsaw organization of the Belarusian Language Society, an evening of remembrance was held dedicated to this bloody date in the history of Belarus – the mass execution of representatives of the Belarusian intellectual elite.
During the event, works of Belarusian musical art were performed by composer Illia Semashkevich. Professional actors and public figures read poems by victims of political repression.
In Białystok, in memory of the Night Of The Murdered Poets of 1937, the Free Choir from Warsaw performed. It presented a special program of poems by artists repressed by the Stalinist regime. The concert occupied a symbolic place – the Museum of Memory of Siberia.
The documentary film "Forest" was shown in the "House of Free Belarus" in Lviv, telling several real stories of Stalin's repressions in the Homel region in the 1930s. The film uses archival video materials and audio recordings in which eyewitnesses talk about the events of the 1930s.
In addition to Belarusians, the event was attended by the co-chair of the League of Ukrainian Women Miraslava Tymchyshyn, students of the history department of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the agrarian university, as well as Ukrainian youth helping Belarusian volunteers.
