What will it do?

A Council of Europe Information Centre for Belarusians will open in Vilnius. Such an agreement was signed on November 13 between this organisation and the Lithuanian government, Zerkalo reports citing the Council of Europe website.

On behalf of the Lithuanian government, the document was signed by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

“I hope that this centre will play a key role in raising awareness and strengthening capacity in the field of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in order to build a democratic and prosperous Belarus in the future,” Landsbergis said.

The signed document takes into account the agreements reached between the CoE contact group and representatives of democratic forces and civil society of Belarus.

Lithuania, which currently holds the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, has made a voluntary contribution to the establishment of the centre, as supporting civil society, human rights defenders and independent media in Belarus and other countries oppressed by authoritarian regimes is a long-term priority of Lithuania's foreign policy.

"This is an important contribution to our support for Belarusian democratic forces and civil society. The information centre will not only provide information about the Council of Europe and its work. It is a sign of hope for all those who strive for democratic values," said Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset.

The centre will provide Belarusians with information about the work, values and principles of the Council of Europe, as well as support events carried out in Lithuania in accordance with the action plan approved by the Contact Group.

The Council of Europe Contact Group for cooperation with representatives of Belarusian democratic forces and civil society was established in September 2022. It meets regularly to provide Council of Europe support and expertise to strengthen the Belarusian democratic society.
