Kyiv may receive “green light” to strike deep into Russia with western weapons.
Russian authorities fear that before the transfer of power to Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden and his administration may take drastic steps towards Russia, a source in diplomatic circles told The Moscow Times.
According to him, such a step could be, for example, a “green light” for Kyiv to strike deep into Russian territory with long-range American weapons.
In 2016, on the eve of Trump's first presidential term, the outgoing Barack Obama administration expelled 36 Russian diplomats from the US and also took away diplomatic dachas in New York and Maryland, which greatly hurt Moscow.
“Since the Democrats have nothing to lose, they may make some decisions that will complicate dialogue in the future. For example, they will allow the use of American weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory,” the diplomatic source said.
Now, the Russian diplomat and a source close to the Foreign Ministry emphasize, the dialogue between Russia and the United States is frozen both at the official level and at the expert level. After Trump's arrival, “probably, one can cautiously predict some restoration of contacts,” the Russian diplomat said. He also predicts that the Russian ambassador will return to the United States after Trump's inauguration.
