22-Year-Old Belarusian Wins Council Of Europe Competition

Belarusian language sounded at the Palace of Europe.

22-year-old Belarusian Artemy Vashkevich has won the Council of Europe competition “Human Rights. Camera. Action!”, Radio Svaboda reports. He was awarded the prize during the recent World Forum for Democracy, which took place in Strasbourg.

Vashkevich is a student living in Poland. According to the young man, his area of public activity is human rights, and his main focus is the abolition of the death penalty (Belarus is the only country on the continent where it exists).

“I wanted to make a video in Belarusian,” Artemy says about the competition. “I really like that in the end, the Belarusian language was heard at the Council of Europe, at the Palace of Europe. The main idea of the video is that we need human rights most of all in our everyday lives, and not just at some turning points. I am very happy that the jury appreciated my work.”
