The condition has been named.
India is ready to give up Russian oil. This is possible if someone else offers New Delhi lower prices.
This is stated in the article by RBC-Ukraine “Course to the South. How Ukraine is fighting Russia’s influence in India, Brazil and Africa.”
According to her, if someone else offers India lower prices, the country will give up Russian oil.
“India never bought Russian oil before the war in Ukraine. We received oil from the Persian Gulf countries. When the war began and when sanctions were imposed against Russia, Russia wanted to enter other economies, and it gave us big discounts,” noted Swasti Rao, a research fellow at the Center for Europe and Eurasia at the Institute for Defense Studies and Analytics from India.
As for Russian weapons, after the start of the full-scale invasion, India has not concluded a single new contract with Russia. And again, there are very pragmatic reasons for this.
On the one hand, Russia is sending all its weapons to the front against Ukraine, and several previously concluded contracts have already fallen through because of this. According to a March report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, in 2009, India imported 76% of its weapons from Russia. In 2023, Russia's share was only 36%.
On the other hand, there is a technology problem. Russian weapons had many foreign components. Their supplies from Europe are gradually being limited, and Chinese components are being used to replace them. And this is causing concern in India: are there any vulnerabilities left in the Chinese components, which poses risks to Indian security given the difficult relations between New Delhi and Beijing.
