The media has learned the reason.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will not attend the first formal hearing in the impeachment trial this week. This is due to his concerns for his safety.
Yonhap reported.
Defence lawyer Yoon Gap-geun made the statement as the Constitutional Court will hold the first oral arguments in the impeachment trial of Yoon on Tuesday, January 14.
Investigators are trying to detain the impeached president for questioning in a separate case related to his brief imposition of martial law.
“As attempts to execute the illegal and invalid arrest warrant continue, there are concerns about personal safety and accidents,” the lawyer said.
He said that for Yoon Seok-yol to appear in court, “the issue of personal safety and it must be resolved.”
Yoon Suk Yeol's trial
South Korea's Constitutional Court previously said it would begin oral arguments in the trial on Tuesday, January 14, with five hearings scheduled through February 4.
Yoon Suk Yeol's lawyers had previously said the president would attend the impeachment trial at an "appropriate" time to present his case.
As reported by the media, if Yoon Suk Yeol fails to appear for the hearing on January 14, the court will have to adjourn the hearing and reconvene him again on Thursday, January 16, for a second hearing, which can then continue even if he is absent.
