He is accused of a shameful crime in his homeland.
The Ukrainian military have captured 51-year-old Italian Gianni Cenni, who fought as a volunteer on the side of Russia, the Airborne Assault Troops of the AFU reported. In his home country, the man is accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl.
It is reported that Cenny is a native of Naples and previously worked in a restaurant in Samara, but left to serve in the Russian Armed Forces in November 2024. He is 51 years old and left his wife and two children at home. The man was captured by the AFU in the battles near Kupyansk in early 2025.
The Italian himself claims that he was ‘illegally mobilised’ into the Russian army.
His wife Ekaterina, who is raising three young children, has appealed to the Russian authorities for help, RIA Novosti reported. She said that she learnt about the capturing of her husband by the Ukrainian military from news and videos on the Internet. Now the woman has no information about Gianni, and no one has contacted her.
According to Italian newspaper Libero, Gianni Cenni is accused in his home country of sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl in 2012. Cenni also threatened the girl's father after her parents filed a police report.
In 2016, Cenni was sentenced to seven years and two months in prison. The sentence came into force in 2022, but by then the Italian had managed to leave for Finland, and from there moved to Russia, where he started a family.
It is also noted that this is not the first conviction of Cenni: in 1999, he confessed to the murder of his colleague, in whom he shot twice because of a disagreement. He was released from prison in 2008.
