Twenty Explosions: AFU Drones Attack Smolensk Aviation Plant

The building is on fire.

On the night of January 21, a group of Ukrainian drones attacked another Russian aircraft factory located in Smolensk, Dialog reports.

The head of the region, Vasily Anokhin, confirmed the drone attack in Smolensk. At the same time, he urged to remain calm, as air defence systems are working in the city. In confirmation of his words, residents of Smolensk began to post actively on the Network the work of ‘Pantsir’. On one of the videos you can see the moment of hitting a drone, but there is also a video in which the Russian system strikes a multi-storey house.

The exact number of drones attacking Smolensk is still unknown. Locals write about explosions in different areas of the city.

It is known that both the local TV tower and the aircraft factory were hit.

In total, about 20 explosions were reported. At the moment when the aviation plant was on fire, the head of the region reported about ‘well done work of the RF Armed Forces’.

The Smolensk Aviation Plant was opened back in 1926. During the Soviet times, the plant produced Yak-18T sport planes and Yak-42 passenger aeroplanes.

Since 2004, the plant has been part of the Tactical Missile Armament Corporation. Since 2022 it has been under Western sanctions because of producing Kh-59 missiles. The plant is also engaged in repair and maintenance of already built aircraft.

The plant employs more than 4,000 people.
