16-Year-Old Minsk Resident ‘Mined’ Russian Institutions

He warned about allegedly impending explosions.

In 2023, a young Minsk resident found an original activity for himself on the Internet — swatting, the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus reports.

This term means sending information on behalf of third parties about a deliberately false bomb threat.

After figuring out what was what, the young man began sending emails to various Russian institutions. Sometimes he called them via the Internet. He warned about allegedly impending explosions, sometimes asking for a reward for his information.

Now the guy is 16 years old, and the criminal case against him has been sent to the Frunzenski District Court of Minsk. The defendant is accused of communicating deliberately false information about impending explosions of buildings, as well as attempting to make such a message. In the Criminal Code of Belarus, Articles 14 and 340 provide for liability for such offenses up to imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.
