The Kremlin did not expect such a development.
Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis believes that the European Union should support Donald Trump's sanctions ultimatum to Vladimir Putin.
He wrote about it on the X social network (Twitter), reports ‘European Truth’.
Landsbergis noted that US President Donald Trump put Putin in a difficult situation by issuing an ultimatum.
‘I am sure that Putin did not expect such a development. Now Putin must choose - admit that he is afraid of new sanctions because his economy is in ruins, or prove that his imperialist ambitions will not be limited by these demands,’ the former Lithuanian foreign minister stressed.
He emphasised that the ultimatum is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done: not only sanctions, but also military support and security guarantees for Ukraine.
‘We must put Western power on the Ukrainian side of the scales. By the way, if the EU wants to look authoritative, it could at least announce its support for Trump's sanctions. And I believe that now even Orban will be forced to agree,’ Landsbergis emphasised.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close ally of Donald Trump in Europe, believes it is necessary for the EU to harmonise its sanctions policy against Russia with the new US administration.
On 22 January, Donald Trump said that if an ‘agreement’ to end the war in Ukraine is not reached soon, he will have no choice but to ‘impose high taxes, tariffs and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and other countries.’
On the first day of his presidency, Trump said Vladimir Putin is destroying Russia by not ending the war.
He later announced that he was ready to consider strengthening sanctions against Russia if it did not agree to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
