Natallia Radzina: I Admire Belarusians
Natallia Radzina

Not turning up for the ‘elections’ in a totalitarian country is quite a feat.

Natallia Radzina, editor-in-chief of Charter97.org, has commented on the failed turnout at Lukashenka's ‘elections’ on 26 January:

- Belarusians massively ignored the electoral farce organised by Lukashenka's regime on 26 January. The polling stations in all cities of the country were empty. Belarusians voted with their feet and did not become participants of the shameful event, although they were invited there not only by the dictator, but also by Tsikhanouskaya and her ‘cabinet’.

A lot of experts called the fake ‘elections’ in Belarus ‘Soviet’. Yet imagine that citizens in the USSR ignored the ‘compulsory election’ and did not go to the polling stations decorated with red banners! And in fact, repressions in Belarus today are more massive and cruel than in the Soviet post-Stalin period.

There were seven times fewer police officers in the totalitarian Soviet Union than under Lukashenka's rule (220 policemen per 100 thousand of the population in the USSR and 1480 per 100 thousand in the Republic of Belarus). And these are the data up to 2020, now the difference is probably 10 times.

Therefore, I admire the wisdom, courage and bravery of Belarusians, who showed on 26 January that most of them continue to oppose Lukashenka's regime. A low bow and endless respect. We will succeed in achieving freedom.
