Lying, Unscrupulous Lukashenka
Arkady Dubnov

The dictator was habitually in full spate.

There is no electoral event in the CIS nowadays more petty in its significance than what was taking place in Belarus under the name of ‘presidential elections’. Lukashenka, who usurped the power in Minsk more than 30 years ago, is staying for the next, 7th (seventh) term. The names of his four ‘competitors’ are not known to anyone in the world, only one of them signalled his physical presence with a proposal to replace the word ‘president’, which is ‘alien’ to Belarusians, with the familiar ‘chairman’, apparently hinting that 70-year-old Lukashenka used to head a state farm for years.

In the 33 years that I have been watching the events in the former Soviet Union, I have never seen such a deceitful, unscrupulous and cruel ruler. Not even Turkmen despots can be compared to him, although they have traditions of the East behind....

Having finally turned into a world pariah in 2020, when he managed to retain power after the rigged presidential election only by means of brute force, and realising his political impairment, Lukashenka does not dare to resign, it is frightening.... The future of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who decided to transit power in Kazakhstan in 2019, which allowed him to keep his place in history as the First President of his country, at least during his lifetime, might not be in the cards for Lukashenka... He will not succeed in creating a ruling dynasty, as the rais (chiefs) in Central Asia - in Turkmenistan and Tajikistan - are trying to do....

Lukashenka understands it very well, that's why he is nervous and rude. He literally threw a tantrum in Minsk, calling the a priori adoption of the resolution on non-recognising the elections in Belarus by the European Parliament ‘groveling kowtowing to big brothers in Washington’. ‘I don't care whether you recognise our elections or not,’ he got furious in response to a British journalist's questions.

Lukashenka also was habitually in full spate towards the Armenian prime minister: ‘Pashinyan started flirting with the EU, he will destroy Armenia’. The Minsk usurper is deeply hurt by Pashinyan's ban on any Armenian politicians visiting Belarus as long as Lukashenka, who supported Azerbaijan in the war against Armenia, is in power there. Thanks to these ‘tendernesses’ the CIS is turning into a rare political serpentarium.
