There was a major chance to shift the government in 2010.
On January 26, the day of the so-called "elections," Radio Racyja asked Andrei Sannikov, the leader of European Belarus, if there had been a genuine opportunity to change the government in 2010, when the opposition politician was a presidential candidate:
— There was a real chance, and we saw this chance. I always say there was an uprising in 2010, and we offered to negotiate. We offered negotiations to the people who were in power. Frankly, some people came to us, hoping secretly for this change.
In the KGB prison, Dzmitry Bandarenka and I tried to continue this line: that there will be an economic crisis, we need to do something, we need to rescue the country, we need to rescue independence. There was a chance, and the chance was great. But Lukashenka was so frightened that for the first time, sitting in a bunker, he gave the order to use force on the day of the 'election'. It didn't happen before. He waited for the observers to leave, for the journalists to leave. The main evil for him is observers and journalists.
— Was it a good thing that there were so many presidential candidates in 2010? Maybe it was better to unite then?
— No, no unification was possible, because there were fake candidates. We knew them, this is not a question for me, because we knew that we had the strongest team, and Lukashenka would do everything to neutralize us. Because all the iconic opposition figures were in our team. We knew what we were doing. The rest... This is on their conscience, because without collecting signatures, they went and played together with Lukashenka.
This should not change anything since he clearly lost this election. It was clear that he did not score 50%. This was also evidenced by those who observed, then there was still the opportunity to do this.
