BBC: Russia Withdrawing Troops From Syria

Ships have arrived in Tartus.

Judging by satellite images, two Russian ships of Sparta and Sparta II have docked near the Russian naval base in Syria's Tartus. According to experts, this could mean that the evacuation of the Russian contingent, which had been expected, has finally begun, BBC reported.

Both ships belong to Oboronlogistics LLC, a shipping company working for the Russian Defence Ministry. They are under US sanctions.

With the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the end of the Russian military presence in Syria was a matter of time, analysts said.

Satellite images analysed by BBC Verify show a large amount of military hardware has been moved into the port of Tartus in recent weeks. The photos show dozens of vehicles and tonnes of equipment in the port.

The Russian military began bringing in hardware back in mid-December. At the same time, the first pictures of columns of Russian vehicles travelling north to the base from other parts of Syria appeared.
