The British government issued a joint statement with Canada, the EU, New Zealand and Australia.
The UK has expanded sanctions against Lukashenka’s regime, adding nine new items to the sanctions list. This was reported on the British government’s website.
The British government issued a joint statement with Canada, the EU, New Zealand and Australia, in which it linked the new restrictions to the “presidential election” held in Belarus the day before.
“We stand united in condemning the sham ‘presidential election’ in Belarus on 26 January and the ongoing human rights abuses committed by the Belarusian regime. The recently announced sanctions represent a coordinated multilateral effort to hold the Lukashenka regime to account,” the statement said.
“We stand with the Belarusian people and recognise their right to determine their future in a truly free and fair manner, without fear, oppression or external interference.”
“We will continue to support the aspirations of the Belarusian people for a free, democratic and independent Belarus,” the statement said.
