Bloomberg: Xi Jinping Is Preparing Successor
XI JINPING

Who could become the next leader of China?

Recent personnel appointments to key leadership positions in China, which were made by the leader Xi Jinping, may indicate that his successor is being prepared. It could be one of the young officials.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

It is noted that this year, the Xi Jinping government intends to carry out a series of reshuffles that will allow us to see for the first time a younger generation of officials who should become the next top leaders of the country. More than 20% of management positions in China will be updated in the near future.

Analysts believe that by the 2030s, these young leaders will reach the age of about 60 — the peak of a career for Chinese civil servants.

“The longer Xi Jinping remains in power, the more likely it is that his future successor will be from the post-70s generation,” said Neil Thomas of the China Analysis Center at the Asia Society Policy Institute.

Among potential candidates for Xi Jinping's successor, Bloomberg singles out Liu Jie. He is the youngest governor in China. He heads the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang. However, experts do not rule out another scenario.

“It is also possible that Xi Jinping will break more norms and keep his close allies in power well beyond the traditional retirement age, ushering in a new era of old-man politics in Beijing,” Thomas suggested.
