Belarus Introduces A Mockery Of Unemployment Benefit

Previously, its size was tied to the base fee.

The Council of Ministers of Belarus, by its Resolution # 1064 of December 31, 2024, established the amount of unemployment benefit from January 1, 2025. The document was published on January 4 on the National Legal Internet Portal.

“The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus decided to establish an unemployment benefit in the amount of 40 Belarusian rubles,” the government document says.

Previously, the amount of unemployment benefit in the country depended on the size of the base value and was “floating”. Now it is determined by the Council of Ministers in agreement with the president, the amount is fixed.

Thus, in 2024, the amount of unemployment benefit ranged from 28 to 80 Belarusian rubles per month. The amount depended on how long a person had not worked and whether he applied for benefits for the first time. For example, those who registered with the employment service and tried to find a job for the first time were assigned a benefit of 85% of the base fee for the first thirteen weeks (in 2024, 34 rubles), and for the next thirteen weeks, 70% of the base fee (28 rubles previously).
