Crowns Of Grand Duchy Of Lithuania And Poland Rulers Found In Vilnius Cathedral Dungeons

The regalia was found in a secret vault.

A secret vault containing the burial regalia of the leaders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland was found in the dungeons of the Vilnius Cathedral, LRT reports.

“On December 16, 2024, a vault was opened in the dungeons where the royal regalia were hidden in 1939, with the outbreak of World War II. The regalia found in the cache were intended for the burial of the rulers of Lithuania and Poland — Alexander, Elizabeth, and Barbara,” said Archbishop of Vilnius, Metropolitan Gintaras Grušas.

According to him, the finds include the crown of the Polish king and Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander, as well as the crown of the wife of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Kazimierz JagiellonElizabeth Habsburg, her chain, medallion, ring and coffin plaque were found.

A crown, a scepter, three rings, a chain and two coffin plaques belonging to Barbara Radziwill — the wife of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and Polish King Sigismund Augustus — were also discovered.

“These crowns were not used during the lifetime of the rulers, they were made after their death and were intended for funeral ceremonies,” Gintaras Grušas noted.
