Trump Hands Over Control Of Lands Near Mexico Border To Pentagon

What does it mean?

President Donald Trump has issued a directive to expand control over federal lands near the US-Mexico border. He is seeking to step up efforts to combat illegal immigration.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

In a memo published late Friday, Trump instructed several secretaries to transfer jurisdiction over federal lands along the border to the Department of Defense. These territories include the Roosevelt National Park Reserve, a narrow strip of land along the southwest border in Arizona, New Mexico, and California, excluding federal Indian reservations.

According to the directive, this opens the possibility of “conducting military activities specified in this memorandum on military installations” along the border. Trump authorized the military to carry out tasks “including the construction of border barriers and the deployment of detection and monitoring equipment” and to designate these areas as “national defense zones.”

The order also allows the defense secretary to “exclude individuals from a military installation” under a preexisting authority — potentially opening the door to expelling migrants.

The authority will initially be exercised on a “limited sector of federal lands,” with an assessment to follow 45 days after Friday’s order.

Bloomberg notes that since returning to the White House, Trump has stepped up deportations of illegal immigrants, seeking to fulfill his campaign promises to combat illegal immigration and secure the southwest border.
