After Zelensky's refusal to recognise Crimea as Russian.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has cancelled a trip to London to hold talks on ending the war in Ukraine. This came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv would not recognise Crimea as Russian as part of a peace agreement, the New York Times reported. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce attributed Rubio's decision to his busy schedule. ‘This is about technical issues in his schedule,’ the spokeswoman noted.
The meeting is scheduled to take place today, 23 April. In addition to Rubio, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff, who is holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, will not attend. The US delegation will be led by Trump's other special envoy, Keith Kellogg. According to Axios, at the meeting, the US wants a response from Ukraine to its peace proposal, which was previously presented to Kyiv and Washington's European allies. The plan involves, among other things, recognising annexed Crimea as de jure Russian territory and the rest of the captured Ukrainian lands as de facto. The peace initiative also implies Ukraine's rejection of NATO membership. Zelensky said publicly once again the day before that Kyiv does not recognise Crimea as de jure Russian territory. ‘This is beyond our constitution. This is our territory, the territory of the people of Ukraine,’ Zelensky said. He said that the Ukrainian delegation would focus on the possibilities of establishing an ‘unconditional ceasefire’ at the meeting with the United States and European allies in London.
