India's Prime Minister Refuses To Join Putin At 9 May Parade
NARENDRA MODI

Peskov could not give a reason.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not accepted Vladimir Putin's invitation to visit Moscow on 9 May to take part in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The Indian leader, who received an official invitation in early April, ‘will not come’, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday. ‘India will be represented, but not at the highest level,’ he said, without specifying the reason for Modi's cancellation.

Peskov added that Chinese President Xi Jinping will be among the guests at the parade. ‘There will be a separate visit by President Xi, to which we attach great importance and are preparing,’ he stressed (quoted by Interfax).

In February, a TASS source reported that Modi's visit to Moscow on 9 May would take place ‘with a high probability’. The participation of the Indian military in the Red Square parade was also being considered, the source claimed.
