"Corruption" doesn't really bother anyone.
The Kremlin uses accusations of theft to crack down on critics of the regime. Corruption doesn't really bother anyone.
The U.K. Defense Ministry reports this in X (Twitter).
The summary notes that on April 24, 2025, a Russian military court sentenced former Major General Ivan Popov, formerly commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army, to five years in a general regime colony on charges of large-scale fraud and document forgery in the line of duty related to the sale of military construction materials.
He was also stripped of his military rank, fined 800,000 rubles (approximately 9.6 thousand), and his request to return to the frontline in Ukraine was reportedly rejected.
According to British intelligence, Popov was removed as commander of the 58th Army (deployed in Ukraine's Zaporozhye region) in July 2023 after his private criticism of the Russian military leadership's decisions on the conduct of the war became public. He was subsequently arrested in May 2024 on fraud charges.
"Corruption is an integral part of the Russian system, where punishment is more often used as a political tool rather than a way to ensure good governance. The Russian regime has long used allegations of corruption - both real and fictional - to eliminate or punish internal critics and those who have displeased more powerful members of the elite," Britain's Ministry of Defense noted.
It will be recalled that in the summer of 2023, at the time of the AFU counter-offensive in southern Ukraine, there was a de facto revolt among the Russian military leadership. Its active participant was Popov. He publicly accused Sergei Shoigu, who held the post of defense minister, of inaction.
