Ukraine's president used his 15 minutes to deliver an important message.
Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump met at the Vatican on April 26. Journalists learned the Ukrainian president's main messages.
The The Economist and Axios report this.
According to the publication, Ukrainian sources say Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used his 15 minutes to deliver a simple message: Ukraine is ready for an unconditional ceasefire, Russia is not, and U.S. President Donald Trump should not give up on the peace that only he can provide.
According to Axios, Zelensky repeated at the meeting that he would not recognize Crimea as Russian, and Trump made it clear he was not asking him to do so, one source said. The plan calls for recognition by the US, not Ukraine.
The source said that during the conversation, Trump insisted that Zelensky sign the US-Ukraine mineral supply agreement as soon as possible .
Even before the meeting, Zelensky's advisers were divided on whether he should even risk a tete-a-tete after the disaster in the Oval Office. But afterward, Zelensky felt he had succeeded in changing Trump's mind about Putin for the first time, sources said.
A source said Zelensky told Trump that he was not afraid to make concessions to end the war, but that to do so, he needed reasonably reliable security guarantees.
A social media post written by the American president afterward showed that he understood the message. His performative rebuke to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin for "pushing (him, - ed)" was his strongest so far.
A U.S. official said the White House was unimpressed with Putin's latest proposal for a three-day ceasefire to mark Victory Day in Russia on May 9.
The massive missile strike on Kiev on April 24, in which a North Korean-made missile killed at least 12 people, has clearly angered Trump.
"At the beginning of the process, Trump was very disappointed with Zelensky. Now it's switched to Putin," the US source said.
What is known about the preparations for the meeting
According to a mediaI source, nothing was decided in advance (about the meeting, - ed), and the initial idea was that they would try to meet after the funeral.
But then the leaders confronted each other on arrival. They found a place to meet privately at St. Peter's Cathedral.
Axios sources said that one possible reason this meeting between Trump and Zelensky was more positive was the absence of Vice President J.D. Vance and White House special envoy Steve Whitkoff.
Zelensky and Trump meet at the Vatican
April 26, the Vatican hosted the funeral of Pope Francis, who died on April 21. The ceremony was attended by thousands of believers and about 50 world leaders.
The event also included a personal meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. It became the first after the conflict in the White House on February 28.
