It has been brought to the attention of the U.S. president that the head of the Kremlin is disrespecting him.
U.S. President Donald Trump has slightly changed his rhetoric about Russian dictator Vladimir Putin after months of non-public diplomatic efforts by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
As Politico writes, citing sources among European politicians, both Starmer and Macron persuaded Trump not to press Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and to direct some of his anger at Putin. To do so, they used the argument that Putin makes the American president look like a fool.
"The U.S. president's public criticism of Putin allowed diplomats in London and Paris to rejoice with restraint as their efforts over the past three months began to bear fruit," the publication wrote.
The publication detailed that British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell and Defense Secretary John Healey played a key role in talks with the Trump team. Their efforts were coordinated with U.S. Ambassador to Britain Mark Burnett.
And British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy admitted to having had 13 conversations with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio this year alone, Starmer and Trump "almost" as many.
"Zelensky clearly influenced Trump's train of thought in Rome," one British ex-ambassador said. He noted that Britain and France had consistently emphasized that Putin was "disrespecting Trump, all the while violating the ceasefire he himself proclaimed." The diplomat suggested that this has become a particularly sensitive topic because Trump is "sensitive to the human cost - it really bothers him."
"Now Trump has realized that Putin cannot be trusted. This is what Macron keeps repeating and trying to convey to Trump. This is our current strategy," the French official detailed.
But as Politico notes, Britain and France are now anxiously waiting to see how long Trump's tough stance on Putin will last.
Brookings Institution analyst and former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer noted that "Trump had a blind spot regarding Putin, who ignored U.S. requests." "But his fresh statements hint that he has begun to feel that Putin is using him," Pifer analyzed.
