The U.S. president also hinted at a turning point in attitudes toward the Kremlin's actions.
US President Donald Trump has spoken out about his recent meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky during events at the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. The head of state said it was a "moment of consolation."
It was reported by ABC News.
This is how the American leader responded to a request from correspondent Terry Moran to comment on the "impressive" photo that "went around the world" showing Trump and Zelensky in St. Peter's Basilica "talking about peace."
"That moment was in a sense a moment of consolation because - a huge number of people are dying. A lot of his people are being killed," the US president responded.
Trump added that "they're being killed, and I feel very bad about that."
It should be noted that the one-on-one conversation between the Ukrainian and US presidents in Italy on April 26 was their first meeting since a quarrel in the Oval Office in Washington in late February.
An ABC News interviewer suggested that Trump appeared to have changed his mind about Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's intentions, recalling the American president's social media post after his conversation with Zelensky at St. Peter's Cathedral. At that time, the American leader criticized Russian shelling of Ukrainian cities and added that it "makes me think that maybe he (Putin, - ed.) doesn't want to stop the war."
Now Trump agreed with the host's assumption and said that "it's possible, of course."
The US president added that he still believes that the Russian dictator allegedly wants peace and an end to the war against Ukraine.
