The U.S. president is growing frustrated with the head of the Kremlin.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the increasing difficulty of negotiating an end to Russia's war against Ukraine is causing him growing frustration that keeps him up at night.
As The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources, Trump stated that it is particularly difficult to negotiate with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and he wants "everything," referring to Ukraine.
The publication noted that this was the answer Trump gave when asked about his biggest foreign policy challenges.
The White House chief added that another difficulty is the war in the Gaza Strip. He noted that it is difficult to find any solution because "they have been at war for a thousand years."
The WSJ recalled that when Trump was campaigning to return to power, he vowed to end both wars diplomatically. At the time, he even said he would end the war in Ukraine "on the first day" of the presidency.
But as the publication pointed out, even after 100 days of Trump's presidency, neither conflict is any closer to resolution, negotiations over Iran's nuclear program have stalled, and the trade war is straining relations with allies, and now Trump has found that solving the world's problems is harder than he thought.
Trump now guffaws, saying he did not seriously say he would end the war between Russian Federation and Ukraine in record time, and that supporters know it.
A professor of US foreign policy at Purdue University Kyle Haynes said: "If he hadn't promised these things repeatedly throughout the campaign, it would be unfair to criticize him for not delivering on them. But he did."
The White House tried to justify Trump by saying he has already achieved many things since the beginning of his presidency. Among them were the agreement of a cease-fire by the Houthis, the return to their homeland of 47 Americans detained abroad, NATO countries increasing defense spending, China being contained. "And we are closer to peace in the Russia-Ukraine war than ever before," White House press secretary Anna Kelly declared.
In addition to Trump's statement, the publication recalled that more recently, senior officials in his administration have acknowledged that Russia has been the biggest evader, abandoning a 30-day cease-fire that Kiev has unconditionally supported and instead pushing for more concessions from Ukraine.
