After refusing to meet with Zelensky, Putin sent a team of his aides to Istanbul for talks.
As Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky arrives in Ankara, the prospects for any agreement to end the war are becoming dim.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has ignored Zelensky's call to meet for direct high-level talks in Turkey. Instead, the Kremlin overlord sent a team of his officials there, casting doubt on the very possibility of talks between the sides.
The point, the publication noted, is that the Russian negotiating team was led by Putin's aide Vladimir Medinsky and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin - the same people the dictator sent to negotiate Ukraine's surrender at the start of the war.
The publication recalled that the last session of these talks was held in Istanbul in March 2022, and they broke down as Russia suffered a military defeat and withdrew from Kiev and other parts of northern Ukraine.
As Reuters added, the U.S. delegation to Turkey included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and senior envoys Steve Whitkoff and Keith Kellogg.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said on Thursday morning that he had met with Rubio to share Zelensky's peace vision and "coordinate positions during this critical week."
