The Charge d'Affaires of the Russian Embassy was summoned "on the carpet" and handed a note.
A Russian Su-35 aircraft violated airspace off the Juminda Peninsula. Moscow accuses the Estonian Navy of attempting to seize the Jaguar oil tanker bound for Primorsk.
The plane stayed in Estonian airspace for less than a minute, the Delfi news agency reported.
The fighter flew with its transponder turned off and did not respond to messages from the Estonian side. At the time of the violation, the Russian Su-35 lacked two-way radio communication with Estonian air traffic control services.
Portugal Air Force F-16 fighter jets stationed at Emari Air Base as part of a NATO mission to patrol Baltic airspace responded to the incident and conducted a reconnaissance flight.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian embassy's chargé d'affaires and handed him a note.
"From Estonia's point of view, this is a very serious and regrettable incident, which is completely unacceptable," Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.
