The Estonian navy tried to detain an oil tanker that was heading to Russia and is under British sanctions.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 14, near the island of Naissaar, not far from Tallinn. According to the Estonian Navy, the vessel was sailing without a flag.
According to the agency, Commander Ivo Vark, the Estonian military contacted him by radio at 15:30. Because the vessel was sailing "without nationality," Estonia "was obliged to check the vessel's documents and legal status," Vark explained.
The crew of the vessel refused to cooperate with Estonia, and so the country's navy escorted it into Russian waters.
The vessel in question is the Jaguar, which Britain added to its sanctions list last Friday; it is one of about 100 vessels in Russia's so-called "shadow fleet."
In X, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna wrote that Russia "must face tougher and faster sanctions" in response to the incident.
In January 2025, following a high-profile incident involving damage to underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland, JEF launched the Nordic Warden mission, which involves monitoring potential threats to infrastructure in 22 areas where the highest concentration of such facilities are located.
