The Author Of The Tactic Of "meat Assaults" Was Appointed Commander-in-chief Of Russia's Ground Forces
Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev

A war criminal was responsible for the destruction of Mariupol.

Colonel-General Andrey Mordvichev, who was responsible for the assault and destruction of Mariupol in the spring of 2022, has been appointed as the new commander-in-chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Armed Forces after the removal of Oleg Salyukov, writes The Moscow Times.

While heading the troops of the Central Military District (CMD) since February 2023, Mordvichev made the tactics of "meat assaults" the main technique of Russian troops in Ukraine, said military analyst Yan Matveev. "It was due to endless infantry roll-ups and huge losses that Russian troops managed to reach Pokrovsk," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

Mordvichev is 49 years old and graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 2016. Before the full-scale war in Ukraine, he served in several Russian military districts in positions ranging from brigade commander to army commander. In 2021-2022, he was in charge of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District (Southeast Military District). In March 2022, the Ukrainian military claimed the death of Mordvichev, whom Russian media called "breakthrough general," in an AFU strike on an airfield in Chernobayevka.

A video later emerged, however, showing the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and Mordvichev shaking hands - allegedly in Mariupol. In the spring of 2022, the general commanded Russian troops who besieged that city and also seized the Azovstal plant, where the AFU had been holding defenses and sheltering civilians for several months. Fokus reported that it was Mordvichev who ordered the storming of Azovstal.

Human Rights Watch reported that Mordvichev, who led the Russian units, may be guilty of committing war crimes in Mariupol. These include attacking the city, blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid and preventing evacuations, as well as crimes against humanity.

In June 2023, the EU and Switzerland imposed sanctions against Mordvichev for supporting actions that threaten Ukraine's territorial integrity and independence. Under his command, Russian units, including Central Military District troops, are involved in aggression against that country, the justification said. In November 2023, the general was placed on Kiev's sanctions list.

The day before, on May 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin by his decree removed General Oleg Salyukov from the post of commander-in-chief of the ground forces, appointing him deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council.
