EU To Apply Four Simultaneous Sanctions Regimes To Russia

In addition to the 17th package, the 18th package has already been announced.

The European Union is preparing the "largest ever" simultaneous application of several sanctions regimes against Russia, which will be announced on May 20 at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. This was announced by a senior EU official at a briefing in Brussels on Friday, May 16, reports DW.

Foreign ministers will approve restrictive measures against Russia under four sanctions regimes: for the war in Ukraine, for human rights violations, for hybrid warfare and for the use of chemical weapons.

A total of more than 130 separate sanctions will be adopted, including against the Russian military-industrial complex, the "shadow fleet" and its accomplices, Russia's suppliers of sanctioned goods from third countries, as well as disseminators of propaganda and disinformation.

Four sanctions regimes

In the framework of the 17th sanctions package for Russia's aggression in Ukraine, 75 new legal entities and individuals, as well as 200 vessels of the "shadow fleet" will be added to the sanctions lists. Thus, the number of individuals on this EU sanctions list will exceed 2,500 and the number of vessels will exceed 300, the official said.

The EU sanctions regime for hybrid activities will impose sectoral measures as well as individual sanctions against 27 individuals and entities in Russia.

An additional 28 individuals and legal entities from Russia will be added to the sanctions lists under the EU's global sanctions regime for human rights violations.

In addition, the EU official said sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons are planned. According to her, it is about chemical means of crowd control, which are used by the Russian side as a means of warfare in Ukraine.

18th package of sanctions

On the same day, May 16, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU is already preparing new large-scale sanctions against Russia. These measures have not yet been approved by the EU Council and their discussion is only planned, so details about the timing and scope of the new sanctions are not yet known.

According to von der Leyen, who spoke in Tirana at the summit of the European Political Community, the new package of sanctions will include restrictive measures against the Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines, the addition of new names to the blacklist of Russian "shadow fleet" vessels, the lowering of the oil price ceiling, as well as additional sanctions against the Russian financial sector.
