The program is currently in the development phase.
The Golden Dome missile defense system proposed by President Donald Trump could cost the United States more than $1.5 trillion, U.S. Space Force Chief of Staff Gen. Bradley Chance Saltzman said during a security conference, Air & Space Forces.
Saltzman warned that the current $542 billion budget is not enough to implement the program.
"Additional funding is required," the general added.
The Golden Dome program calls for a satellite system in low and medium Earth orbit to detect, track and defeat hypersonic missiles and sophisticated threats from countries such as China and Russia.
The project is already being compared to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, also known as Star Wars, which aimed to protect the U.S. from nuclear attack but was scrapped due to high cost and technical limitations.
Saltzman said the program is now in the development phase. Once the basic plan is formed, it will be submitted to Defense Secretary Pete Gegseth for further approval by the White House.
