Sibiga said there should be more steps than the EU's 17th sanctions package.
The only real indicator of the Russian Federation's readiness to end the war in Ukraine is its agreement to an unconditional, complete and lasting ceasefire.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said this, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing the press service of the ministry.
Sibiga said the results of this week's intense diplomacy can be viewed from three perspectives: Ukrainian, Russian and global.
From the Ukrainian point of view, Ukraine reaffirmed its commitment to peace and agreed to return 1,000 of its people.
From the Russian point of view, Putin used the Istanbul meeting for the purposes of domestic propaganda and imitation of the peace process, buying time, and delaying the imposition of new sanctions. He is trying to appear constructive while actually refusing to end the war.
From a global perspective, there is only one real indicator of Russia's willingness to end the war: Putin's agreement to an unconditional, complete and lasting ceasefire.
The minister believes the world cannot allow Russia to use the Istanbul meeting as an excuse for continued aggression.
- There must be more steps than the EU's 17th sanctions package, for which we are grateful. Price cap on oil, embargo on Russian energy products in Europe, shadow fleet, full sectoral sanctions against the entire banking sector and the central bank, as well as other steps by Europe, the US and other partners," the minister said.
Sibiga said economic pressure should go side by side with steps to strengthen Ukraine: additional deterrence packages, air defense, investment in the defense industry.
- We continue to call on Russia to agree to a full and lasting ceasefire, stop the killing and start a meaningful peace process. Every day of refusal should lead to increased pressure," the minister said.
