US Congress Ready To Impose "crushing" Sanctions Against Russia

Rubio explained when that will happen.

Washington has been giving Moscow time to make progress in peace talks, but patience is running out - a decision on sanctions is on the way.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this, Face the Nation reported, citing an interview with the official.

He said the Trump administration had previously asked the Senate to give it some time to see if progress would be made in the peace talks.

The State Department chief noted that for six or seven weeks now, the White House has been "making it pretty clear to the Russian side that this initiative (imposing sanctions. - ed.) is moving forward."

"We've been communicating to the Russians that this process (imposing sanctions. - ed.) is already underway. We expected that when it was finalized, the bill would have almost 80 co-sponsors in the Senate and, I think, about the same level of support in the House of Representatives. We explained that this is an initiative that we can't stop and we have no control over," Rubio said.

In the end, he added, Congress, especially Republicans in the House and Senate, tried to give President Trump space and time to reach some agreements.

"But we have repeatedly, for almost two months now, warned the Russians that this (imposing sanctions. - ed.) would happen if there was no progress. And I think it is now that this is starting to materialize. And this is one of the things that I reiterated again this week when I was with Lindsey Graham in Turkey: they (Republicans. - ed.) already have 77 signatures. He thinks they can get to 80 or even more. And this is just a fact that we've been warning the Russians about for weeks," the head of the State Department said.
