Rubio: Vatican Can Become A Platform For Peace Talks Between Ukraine And Russian Federation
Marco Rubio

Pope Leo XIV promised to personally make every effort to end the war.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the Vatican could become a venue for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Thus the politician accepted the Holy See's proposal after Pope Leo XIV promised to personally make "every effort" to help end the war. This is according to Associated Press.

Rubio said he will be discussing potential ways the Vatican could help with the issue of negotiations between the parties to the conflict.

When the secretary of state was asked if the Vatican could be a peace broker, he said:

"I wouldn't call it a mediator, but it's certainly - I think it's a place that both sides would be comfortable going to. So we'll be talking about all of that and obviously always grateful to the Vatican for their willingness to play this constructive and positive role."

Vatican's Role in Russia-Ukraine Talks

The AP recalled that the Vatican maintains diplomatic neutrality and has long offered its platforms to facilitate negotiations.

The previous Pope Francis, who was noted for his controversial statements on the war in Ukraine, entrusted the president of Italy's Bishops' Conference, Matteo Zuppi, with a mandate to seek a path to peace. However, such a mandate has been narrowed to facilitating the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. The Holy See has also been able to mediate some prisoner exchanges.

In a meeting at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Rubio thanked Zuppi for the Vatican's humanitarian support, and noted continued cooperation under the new leadership of Pope Leo XIV.

"Leo, who was elected the first-ever U.S. pope on May 8, endorsed Francis' call for peace in Ukraine in his first Sunday blessing as pope. He called on all sides to do everything possible to achieve a "real, just and lasting peace," the publication emphasized.

At the same time, Ukrainian historian Anatoliy Babynsky said that no Pope has ever managed to stop a war. He noted that history has many cases when there were attempts of Popes to settle military conflicts, especially in the 20th century, but all were in vain.

"There are only small examples of settling such, internal civil conflicts in Africa or South America, where the church was able to act as a mediator, but even this was not always successful," Babinsky emphasized.

In turn, the publication La Repubblica reported that the new Pope will come to Ukraine. According to journalists, Turkey, Ukraine and Peru are the countries that the pontiff will visit first. It is known that the previous day the Pope received an invitation to visit Ukraine from President Vladimir Zelensky.
