The protest could be one of the largest in recent memory.

Thousands of Hungarians gathered in Budapest on Sunday evening to protest against a bill initiated by the government of Viktor Orban that targets public organizations and independent media.

This, according to European Pravda.

Protesters against Orban's new legislative initiative gathered in the Kossuth Square neighborhood of the Hungarian capital, in front of the parliament building.

Journalists estimate the protest could be one of the largest in recent times, and participants said they plan to come out again next week.

Orban's Fidesz party this week introduced a bill in parliament to restrict foreign funding of civil society and media outlets deemed a "threat to Hungary's sovereignty."

More than a hundred Hungarian organizations and media outlets have criticized the government's proposals as reminiscent of Russia's "foreign agents" law and aimed at destroying the remnants of democracy in Hungary.

The Hungarian government, for its part, has made no secret of linking its initiative to Ukraine and countering so-called "Ukrainian propaganda."

Orban has resorted to another attack on civil society less than a year before parliamentary elections, where Fidesz may lose to the opposition Tisza party led by Peter Madjar.
