Record turnout was recorded.

Voting in the second round of the presidential election has ended in Romania. According to the first exit polls, the liberal mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan is in the lead, reports BBC.

According to the Avangarde sociological institute, Dan is ahead of his rival - nationalist and leader of the far-right AUR George Simion party - by nearly ten percentage points. Dan has 54.9 percent, Simion 45.1 percent.

The Central Electoral Bureau reports that turnout was 64.72 percent, a record high in the last twenty years.

In his first address to supporters since the exit polls were published, Dan cited judicial and administrative reform as priorities for the country.

This is the second attempt to elect Romania's president. The Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round in December 2024, in which ultra-nationalist Calin Georgescu unexpectedly came out on top. Romanian authorities said at the time that they had evidence of Russian interference in the election campaign. Georgescu was not allowed to run for re-election.
