A Pro-Western Candidate Wins Romania's Presidential Election

On Sunday, May 18, a second round of presidential elections was held in Romania. According to the results of counting 100% of the election protocols, the mayor of Bucharest, pro-European politician Nicusor-Daniel Dan, wins, New Voice reports.
As of 07:00 Minsk, 100% of the votes had already been counted.
Nicusor-Daniel Dan has won the second round of the presidential election in Romania. According to official data from the Central Electoral Commission, he received 53.60% of the vote, ahead of far-right candidate George Nicolae Simion, who garnered 46.40%.
A total of 11,507,695 citizens took part in the election.
George-Nicolae Simion conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent Nikushore-Daniel Dan on his victory.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Simion said:
"I want to congratulate my opponent, Nikushore Dan. He won the election and it was the will of the Romanian people."
Earlier, after the publication of exit polls that recorded Dan's strong lead, Simion refused to recognize their veracity and prematurely declared himself the winner. However, with the appearance of the final counts of 100% of the votes, which confirmed Dan's victory with a result of 53.6% against 46.4%, he changed his position.
Simion also stated that he would continue his political activity and "fight for Romania."
With Nicusor Dan's victory, he was already congratulated by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who emphasized the importance of partnership with Romania and its role in supporting European security.
