A Mexican Navy Vessel Rammed Into The Brooklyn Bridge In New York City

There were 277 people on board.

A large-scale accident occurred in New York: the Mexican Navy sailing vessel "Cuautemoc" collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. There were 277 people on board, including cadets and crew members. The collision killed two people and injured 19 others, of whom two are in critical condition.

According to data from the NYPD, the ship lost momentum while passing near the Brooklyn Bridge, causing the captain to steer the ship toward one of the bridge's supports. Law enforcement officials suspect mechanical problems and a power outage caused the accident.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed in a statement on social media X that two people were killed and two of the 19 injured were in critical condition. The Brooklyn Bridge, meanwhile, suffered no significant damage and was reopened to traffic after an inspection by engineers.

Reaction from authorities and information about the vessel

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sadness over the deaths of two crew members in the accident. Mexican authorities have already said they are ready to cooperate with U.S. investigators to find out what caused the crash.

According to the Mexican Navy, the ship, the Cuautemoc, is 91 meters long and 12 meters wide. It first set sail in 1982. Every year, the ship goes on training voyages after the completion of classes at the naval school for the cadets to complete their training.

The current voyage began on April 6 from the port of Acapulco. The final destination of the voyage was to be Iceland.

After the ship collided with a bridge, a search and rescue operation immediately began. Rescuers extracted the victims from the ship and took them to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Those in critical condition were treated and hospitalized at a nearby hospital.

New York City officials said an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway and the results will be announced upon completion of the examination.
