The decision was made by the Federal Office for the Defense of the Constitution.
The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the entire Alternative for Germany party as right-wing extremist - which, however, does not mean it has been banned, but merely gives the security services more powers of supervision.
According to Spiegel.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has released a conclusion after months of analysis that the entire Alternative for Germany party should be considered a confirmed right-wing extremist party.
Till now, only its state cells in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt had such status, while the party as a whole had suspected right-wing extremist status.
The report is more than 1,100 pages long and contains numerous pieces of evidence to support the conclusion.
The new classification of Alternative for Germany expands the powers of the relevant authorities to supervise the party's activities with intelligence. This could include, among other things, wiretapping and agency work.
The ruling is likely to intensify the debate over whether Alternative for Germany should be banned, for which the Bundestag, Bundesrat or government would have to petition the Constitutional Court.
Many politicians have previously said that classifying the party as confirmed right-wing extremist would be an important factor for them.
In early parliamentary elections, the AdG won 152 seats - almost twice as many as it had - and became the main opposition force. Support for the party is highest in the eastern states.
An early April poll showed the AdG topping the country's political power rankings for the first time.
The Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which will form the next German government, have warned against allowing Alternative for Germany lawmakers on the parliamentary control committee overseeing the intelligence services.
