European Leaders Reveal What Trump Told Them About Phone Conversation With Putin

The EU will increase pressure on Russia.

The leaders of Italy, Germany, Finland and the president of the European Commission discussed with US President DonaldTrump his telephone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on the evening of May 19.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on his X page assured the public of continued aid to Ukraine, as well as continued pressure on Russia to end its war.

"Europe and America are very united here: We will closely accompany Ukraine on the way to a ceasefire. Europe will increase pressure on Moscow through sanctions. We agreed on this with the US President after his talks with Putin," he wrote.

Merz's office later clarified that the US President and European partners "agreed on the next steps" during the conversation.

"They agreed to closely coordinate the negotiation process and seek another technical meeting...European participants announced increased pressure on the Russian side through sanctions," they said.

Further - European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen thanked Trump via social media X for "tireless efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine."

"It is important that the U.S. remains engaged in this process. We will continue to support Vladimir Zelensky in achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine," she said.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the leaders discussed "peace talks" between Ukraine and Russia, a cease-fire and steps toward a "just and lasting peace."

"It is important to continue close coordination between the United States and Europe. Finland continues to support Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," Stubb assured on his page X.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that world leaders are pushing for the immediate start of talks between the parties that can lead to a ceasefire as soon as possible and create conditions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

"In this regard, the Holy Father's (Pope Leo XIV - ed.) willingness to hold talks at the Vatican was appreciated. Italy is ready to contribute to facilitating contacts and working for peace.
