The actions of the Belarusian regime violate international law.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that countries in the region could join the lawsuit that Lithuania has filed with the International Court of Justice in The Hague to hold the Belarusian regime responsible for the migration crisis it provoked, LRT reported.
"I believe that there is always a possibility for our partners to join at a later stage. The fact that we have shown leadership is a very good thing. We have shown that we are unacceptable to what is happening in neighboring countries," the Lithuanian head of state said on Tuesday on the air of "Žinių radijas."
He commented on Lithuania's decision to sue Belarus in the UN International Court of Justice, arguing that the actions of Alexander Lukashenko's regime violate international law.
Lithuanian Foreign Ministry noted that the lawsuit is related to violations of the obligations of states under the UN Protocol against the illegal transportation of migrants by land, sea and air.
According to Nauseda, illegal migration is not a past phenomenon.
"It happens again, escalates again, creates tension at our border. And only a naive person will not understand that this is done deliberately - in order to escalate, destabilize the situation and create additional problems both for our countries and for the entire European Union," the President said.
He added that after the migration crisis in 2021, the EU has become more stable:
"We managed to draw the attention of the European Union to the problem of security of external borders, and this is reflected in the latest documents of the European Council: the countries that border with aggressor states - Belarus and Russia - should be paid attention to the security of the external borders.
