The United States has completed production of the first prototype of the new B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb - about a year earlier than planned.
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced this.
B61-13 is a modernized version of the previous model B61-12 and has a higher maximum yield. The department notes that the new weapon is designed to hit well-defended targets, particularly underground command centers and large-area facilities.
Plans for the B61-13 were announced in 2023. It is to replace the B61-7 variant, which was previously expected to be decommissioned when the B61-12 arrives. The B61-12 is also to replace the B61-3 and B61-4 variants. The B61 remains the oldest family of U.S. nuclear gravity bombs.
"The Pantex plant has completed production of the first production unit of the B61-13. This is an important milestone in the modernization of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, completed one year ahead of schedule," the statement said.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the achievement is a response to growing global security challenges. He said the successful production of the first sample is a "signal of strength" for both U.S. allies and adversaries.
