Ukraine Urged The EU To Lower The Ceiling Price For Russian Oil To $30 Per Barrel

Ukraine's foreign minister asked to tighten economic pressure on the Kremlin.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has called on the European Union to tighten economic pressure on Russia, in particular - to lower the ceiling price for Russian oil to $30 per barrel. He said this in Brussels before the meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers, UNIAN reported. "The EU should go beyond the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. The ceiling price for Russian oil should be $30," Sibiga emphasized.

According to him, further tightening of restrictions is necessary because Vladimir Putin continues the war and shows that he is not going to stop it. "Europe needs full diplomatic mobilization to deter Russian aggression and restore peace on the continent. Ukraine is not an obstacle to ending the war," he added.

An initiative to revise the current oil ceiling was also earlier proposed by European Commissioner for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis. He said that at the upcoming meeting of finance ministers of the G7 countries (G7) he intends to formally make a proposal to lower the ceiling price for Russian oil, which is now set at $60 per barrel. Although Dombrovskis did not name the exact parameters, Reuters interlocutors familiar with the talks said the European Commission is discussing a plan to lower the price ceiling to $50 per barrel.

May 20, the EU Council officially approved the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions. The new measures include restrictions against nearly 200 Russian tankers that are part of the so-called "shadow fleet." The sanctions also affected a number of Russian companies, including Surgutneftegaz, insurance company VSK, as well as the Center for Complex Unmanned Solutions, which develops military drones.

The EU has already announced the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, it will include measures against the Nord Stream gas pipelines, as well as a reduction in the ceiling price of Russian oil. "Putin does not want peace, so we are obliged to increase the pressure," she said.

In parallel with the European Union, the UK has also tightened its sanctions. According to the British government's report, the following companies fell under the restrictions: the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA); the St. Petersburg Currency Exchange; the company A7, established with the participation of PSB Bank to ensure settlements in foreign economic activity; the distributor of electronic components MT-Systems; and the St. Petersburg Settlement Center. London also imposed sanctions against a number of registrars and depositories, including Surgutinvestneft, VTB Registrar, VTB Specialized Depository and R.O.S.T.. In addition, 18 vessels of the Russian "shadow fleet" were included in the list.
