Rubio: Russia Wants What It Has No Right To In Ukraine

The U.S. Secretary of State shared why peace talks have stalled.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio believes there is no military solution to the "crisis" in Ukraine and the war should end with negotiations. During a congressional hearing, he shared his views on why peace talks have stalled, Reuters reports.

"The fundamental challenge we have in Ukraine is that Russia wants what it doesn't have right now and is not entitled to. And Ukraine wants what it cannot get back militarily," Rubio said.

In turn, Democratic Senator Cynthia Shaheen accused Rubio and Donald Trump of giving Moscow leverage ahead of peace talks to end the war. At the same time, the Secretary of State disagreed and reminded that all sanctions against Russia remain in place. However, the senator emphasized that the leverage the U.S. gave up was taking Ukraine's NATO membership off the table and removing its commitment to continue helping Kiev with intelligence and military equipment.

"Well, that's a different decision. That's a different issue. That's not for me to decide. The White House will have to make a decision as to whether to ask Congress for additional legislation," Rubio said when asked if Trump was going to have a new bill in support of Ukraine.
