This is the first time a U.S. president has made such a statement.
Back on May 19, during a telephone conversation with EU leaders, US President Donald Trump made it clear that Putin will continue to wage war, as he is confident that he is winning on the battlefield. The most interesting thing is that the EU leaders knew everything about Putin's plans and had no illusions, while Trump said such words aloud for the first time. And this despite the fact that the head of the White House has repeatedly stated that the Russian dictator is tired of war and wants peace, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Even after such words from Putin, the US president still refused to join the EU and impose new sanctions against Russia. Even before the phone call with Putin, the US president promised EU leaders to impose sanctions if the Kremlin refuses to ceasefire.
The only positive from the phone call between Trump and Putin is that from now on the US president understands that the Russian dictator does not want peace.
The EU also realized that now all military aid to Ukraine will fall on their shoulders. However, Trump will still give the go-ahead to sell US weapons to Ukraine.
After talking to Putin, Trump said it was "not his war" and only Kiev and Moscow should negotiate. The EU said talks at the Vatican between Russia and Ukraine would only be possible when the Kremlin ceases fire.
