One of the suspects in the terrorist attack has been detained.
Last night in Washington, D.C., two Israeli embassy employees were shot dead near the capital's European Museum, just steps from the FBI office.
It was reported by Sky News.
Israel's ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called what happened a "despicable act of anti-Semitic terrorism."
"We are confident that the US authorities will take decisive action against those responsible for this criminal act," he wrote on social media X.
At this stage, detectives have yet to establish a possible motive for the shooting. Pamela Smith, Washington's police chief, confirmed at a news conference that one suspect is currently in custody. During his arrest, he shouted "free, free Palestine".
Before the attack, he was seen strutting back and forth outside the museum, then he approached a group of four people, pulled out a gun and fired it.
The two dead were reportedly a young couple who were about to get engaged, as the boyfriend had only bought one, intending to propose next week.
"They were a lovely couple who came to spend the evening at the Washington Cultural Center," Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yehiel Leiter said.
He also confirmed that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump after the attack occurred. Trump himself also reacted to the incident.
"These horrific murders in Washington, D.C., based obviously on anti-Semitism, must stop NOW! Hate and radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. It is so sad that things like this can happen! God bless you ALL!", Trump wrote.
U.S. Interior Secretary Christy Noem called the attack "senseless" and vowed to "bring this despicable criminal to justice".
Preliminary reports say the suspect's name is Elia Rodriguez, he is 30 years old, from Chicago, and was not previously known to police.
"There is no active threat in our community. I know that this horrific incident will frighten many people in our city and in our country. I want to make it clear that we will not tolerate this violence and hatred in our city," said Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.
