Putin Awarded Lavrov With Russia's Highest Order After Relations With Half The World Collapsed

The Russian Foreign Minister has become a pariah of world diplomacy.

Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin has awarded Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, the highest state award, which was established by Emperor Peter the Great and then restored in 1998, The Moscow Times reports.

"The talent, knowledge, experience and intellect of Russia's chief diplomat Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov have brought him unconditional respect both in our country and around the world," Putin said, presenting Lavrov with the order, which has been awarded to only 28 people over the past three decades.

As the country's top diplomat, Lavrov has carried out "colossal in scope and complexity" work "for the benefit of the Fatherland," Putin said after Russia's diplomatic ties with key countries around the world were severed and the number of Russian diplomats expelled from abroad set a record since the Cold War.

Now, as a reminder, Russia considers "unfriendly" countries representing half of the world economy: among them are the United States (GDP $28 trillion), European Union states (GDP $29 trillion), the United Kingdom (GDP $3.4 trillion) and Japan ($4.2 trillion). And in terms of the number of sanctions imposed is a world record holder ahead of Iran and DPRK - more than 17 thousand as of the beginning of 2025. "Now for the first time, well, at least in 150 years, we are alone," Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Security Council, complained about Russia's lack of real allies in 2023.

Lavrov himself, a foreign ministry official with 50 years of experience and a former Russian envoy to the UN Security Council, has become a pariah in world diplomacy since the war in Ukraine began, and his circle of contacts has shrunk to a handful of "friendly" countries and Third World dictatorships. Lavrov's recent meetings, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, include Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gideon Timoteos, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandon, Venezuela Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto, Niger Foreign Minister Yau Sangare, and Zimbabwe Foreign Minister Amon Murwira.

While claiming that "it is impossible to isolate Russia," Lavrov is traveling around Africa because he has nowhere else to go, said Fedor Lukyanov, head of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy. "Where else would he fly to? - Lukyanov wondered. - He used to be constantly in Europe, attending various conferences. Now that's over" (quoted by Bloomberg).
