A NASA service recorded the fire.
The U.S. fire monitoring system FIRMS, developed by NASA, has recorded a fire on the territory of Rosneft's Ryazan oil refinery after a Ukrainian drone attack, Astra reported. The channel published FIRMS satellite images, which allegedly show a fire on the territory belonging to the plant.
Before the fire, Ryazan was attacked by drones. According to Mash, at least five drones were shot down near the oil refinery. At 17:44, a threat of UAV attack was declared in the region, the channel "112 Alert for the Ryazan region" reported.
The Ryazan refinery is one of the five largest oil refineries in Russia. It provides fuel for the Moscow region, among others. This is not the first attack on the refinery: in February, a drone strike caused a fire at the refinery. As a result, the refinery was forced to stop processing oil.
According to Reuters estimates, Russia will lose at least 10% of its refining capacity in 2025 alone as a result of attacks on refineries. A year earlier, in 2024, drone strikes and difficulties in repairing equipment caused refining volumes to fall to their lowest level in 12 years - 267 million tons. Exports of oil products, meanwhile, fell by 9% to 113.7 million tons.
The Russian authorities responded by classifying the statistics. In May 2024, the Energy Ministry stopped transmitting operational information on gasoline production to Rosstat, and in August of the same year, data on diesel production were classified.
According to Reuters, by February 2025, the volume of idle primary refining capacity at Russian refineries rose to 3.5 million tons against 2.3 million tons in January. The growth is explained, among other things, by emergency shutdowns of a number of refineries - in Ryazan, Saratov, Syzran and Volgograd - after UAV strikes. In general, exports of oil products from Russia in February decreased by 7.5% compared to January and by 13.6% in annual terms, amounting to 8.72 million tons. In particular, diesel exports fell by 6% over the month to 3.6 million tons.
With this background, the Russian authorities introduced a ban on gasoline exports. In addition, supplies of diesel fuel to foreign regions have significantly decreased. Thus, according to the Center for Price Indices (CPI), in February diesel exports to Africa fell almost twice - from 1.27 million tons to 684 thousand tons. Supplies also decreased in the direction of Brazil and other South American countries, as well as Turkey, one of the largest markets for Russian diesel.
